Accolades for Blue Cathedral
Blue Cathedral is eight tracks of pure psychedelic rock with only a fleeting relation to the current day and age. They straddle the line between self-indulgent psychedelic jams and straightforward rock. For modern day comparisons, think Lord Sterling, Orange Sunshine, Colour Haze, and the like. For a classic reference, look no further than Piper of the Gates of Dawn-era Pink Floyd. While there are touches of the Stooges and Blue Cheer to them, Comets on Fire share the most with early Floyd.
Like Zappa? Track two. Like Neil Young circa Mr. Soul spread out over ten minutes? Track eight. Spacemen 3, Blue Cheer, Beefheart-era Zappa, all the best shit about all the best bands you love. This record fucking rules.
Blue Cathedral was the first Comets on Fire album I've listened to, and on intial reaction it was intriguing. several more spins of the disc, it just got better and better. Comets on Fire strike me as one of those bands you can hear a single track from 30 times and you still pick up on different nuances spread throughout the song.
