Accolades for Self Titled
This is the long awaited debut from Houston doom unit, Well of Souls. Well of Souls contains a unique, powerful vocalist (similar to Mark Zammaron of Las Cruces) whose approach is somewhat different, epic yet original. Well of Souls shows an influence of early Fates Warning and shades of Solitude Aeturnus, with its Candlemass/Last Chapter style stomping riffs and fleeting Ozzy-ish vocal moments. Then proceeds to pummel in classic Candlemass/Solitude hues. This is doom in every sense of the word! Overall a fine debut and another John Perez and company produced epic find by Brainticket.
Well of Souls are definitely serious business when it comes to doom. It's about long songs, crunchy guitars back to back with beautiful little clean acoustic style interludes. Vocals are pretty melodic and have lots of overdubbed parts that are sometimes right on top of the melody, at other times harmonies. Fans of Messiah era Candlemass will definitely get a kick out of the crunchy doubling guitar styles. Overall this is progressive doom with lots of parts, stories and concepts. For the serious doom listeners--early Judas Priest meets Candlemass crossed with JR Tolkien.
True and pure epic doom heavy metal that should please all Solitude Aeturnus fans!
