Accolades for One Breath from Winter
The noise Grievous secrete doesnt belong to the same niche as Greg Andersons and Stephen OMalleys drone dissonance, Sunn0))). And yes, secretes is an apt word for this metal-doom-sludge mix. The three songs on this EP have the viscous qualities of sludge and the ambience of doom, but the band know how to bust out a classic metal riff that moves faster than the speed of nothing. The second track has some Kyuss-esque guitar licks that give the song the required heaviness but without the usual wall of distortion (well, that comes in at the end). Grievous One Breath from Winter has a doomy vibe, sludges speed, and metal trappings. Its a winning combination. If you like Weedeater, Jumbos Killcrane, Ufomammut, or Buried at Sea, youll probably dig Grievous.
This trio of sludge is pervasive, proving that low notes (turned up) cause a widespread expression of unrest and emotion: breaking down thought, pounding away at the soul, grinding assumptions into powder. Grievous' efforts are triumphs of minimalism, reducing rock to its most elemental appeal. The group forces the listener through darker images of sorrow, loneliness and the pain of suffering.
