Electric Basement by Brian Coles With the loose exhaust of Motorpsycho (remember them?) and the production values of grungy Hendrix (where the guitars are nasty and the drums are distant and atmospheric and the bass is got some serious ass cheeks goin'), we have Blind Dog. Call'em doom/stoner or whatever but just don't call these guys anything to their faces. They are likely to spit in your face...after pummeling it into silly putty for 30 minutes. The guitars have the slab of Sab, while the vocals are beer bellied BTO gone brutal post-skank weed. "Thundergroove" cranks while "Beyond My Reach" is a surprisingly subtle rocker with a desert wander kinda vibe. "When I'm Finally Gone" is another exploratory jaunt, tripping via Moody Blues acoustic guitars and a quirky restraint on the vocals. Nice shuffle on this one too. The deeper one gets into the disc the more they'll realize that the band has more to offer than just full throttle ampage. Very '69. Although there aren't any home run tracks (okay, the riff on "Back Where I've Always Been" rules, I admit it!), most of this is pleasant solid enough to warrant a few chances from the retro crowd. << Back to reviews of The Last Adventures of Captain Dog |
