Album Reviews Band Takes

UNSANE.

Been going 30 years and every lp sounds almost the same. Even the lp jackets all look pretty much the same. Only minor tweaks to the sound over 30 years, added a bit more distorted treble tone on the bass after a feeling out process during the first 2 lp's then BAM we got it now

Not the kind of band you can play on the stereo at vol 4. It just sounds ragged and squally down there. Needs extreme volume so the farty bass can meld with guitar murder and make babies in your earbrain

Hate to brag but at one stage I had virtually the entire canon on vineel but inexplicably along the way I must have been overcome by brain herpes because I sold a couple on the line. Lured by big paydays probably.

s/t (1991) 6/10 TOTAL SQUALL. this tinpot cunt is hard going. what a fucking racket and it's not always a pleasant one
Total Destruction (1993) 6/10 less squall second time around but still a very, very torrid inaccessible motherfucker.
Scattered, Covered and Smothered (1995) 9/10. they got it now. slowed it up a bit, mid-tempo motherfuckers and the requisite 2 or 3 real slow burners, farty bass steamroller deathroll.
Attack On Japan (1996) 10/10 greatest live document in recorded history
Amrep Xmas (1997) 10/10 also greatest live document in recorded history
Occupational Hazard (1997) 7/10 slight falling off here, too quick and hectic and squally, needs more midtempo murderburn. Saved by "Sick."
Blood Run (2005) 10/10 BACK IN BUSINESS NOW, knuckle drag, lava roll, everything got crushed. And hello, Captain Dipshit here SOLD the cunt. Wft was I thinking. ($$)
Visqueen (2007) 10/10 oh god the treble warble murder quack bass oh FAHHHHK, looking back now maybe this and Visqueen were their high point, the sales history of discogs certainly thinks so, big bucks for these 2 cunts on vinyl which still doesnt explain the brain herpes that commandeered my dick that fateful day and compelled me to SELL THE 2 CUNTS ONLINE. "Oh yeah, 1 time pressing of 1,000, I'll just pick up another copy one day." MORAN.
Wreck (2012) 8/10 faster and more clipped, still has some farty bass but no more slow roll murderburn
Sterilize (2017) 8/10 takes the sound of last one and pushes it towards a 9 but still a bit too fast to be my Unsane.

Fucked Up

Hidden World 8/10. rhythm section munt was a yes. "Two Snakes", etc. STUPIDLY, this fuckin lp hooked me in and teased me into buying all their subsequent releases. It took me 12 YEARS to learn this first full-length was their high point to which they would never fucken re-ascend

Chemistry of Common Life 6/10. barely a keeper. they seemed to decide, on the whole, not to rock. introduced elements of the "swirly" psych guitar sound thing that they'd go to town with in their following lp's. ffs

David Comes To Life 0/10. no rhythm, no rocking, added 7 guitars and went all "psychedelic." You can buy this hoary great flop of a 2xLP for $6 on discogs. No one wants the fucker. It's shit. Zero memorable songs, not even any memorable riffs, just a shapeless shartstorm of self-indulgent overdrive powerwank. I wonder if even the band hate this fuckin thing. They should, the cunts

Glass Boys
0/10. then they did it all again. and I bought it. ffs. when will I learn

Zanzibar. no fucken way I'm buying this. Although its a soundtrack so it might be alrigh OH FUCK THERE I GO AGAIN,, GIVING THESE FOOLS GOLD CUNTS YET ANOTHER CHANCE, when will I learn, ok, thats it, go fuck yourselevs cunts i7ve finally learned and will not be spending any more money on you

my Cocteau Twins LP ranking:

1. Treasure 9.1/10 dreamscape of menace waft with added echoey drums
2. Heaven or Las Vegas 9/10 shimmering haze of sumptuous loud jangle waffle
3. Blue Bell Knoll 8/10 synth wobble waffle pillows
4. Garlands 7/10 wee bit more doilied-up menace to their first outing
5. Head Over Heels 7/10 ethereal wibble from the planet art fop
6. Victorialand. 6/10 more edgy elevator music for the Enya-on-drugs set
7. Four Calendar cafe 4/10 the ethereal shit was gone. a misstep, it was over and this LP "broke character" and shouldnt have happened

Steel Pole Bathtub

we all have those wee bands we tend to think of as our little secrets and this has always been mine. have all their shit, seen them plenty of times live but somehow virtually never actually spoken to anyone about them for some reason. They were my first impression of a live show when I went to America. First night, rushed out to tiny SF club to see them. Excited beyond belief. This is it! Stood in the centre of small room by myself, the other 20 or so people leaning against the walls. That's odd, hmm, whatever, must be cultural. Band comes on, first note hits and BAM!,some dude just THROWS me towards a wall. YES! Welcome to America, baby!. God I was so happy.

Butterfly Love 5/10. some folks argue the first 2 lp's are where its at, I disagree. This one is grunchy but not so memorable
Lurch 6/10 still grunchy but the melodic craft was emerging, whence followeth from whereupon the lotus would reveal its true form before the serpent of Vishnu
Miracle of sound in motion 10/10. this should've been bigger than fucken Nevermind. I always thought that. A fuckign perfect record. Songs, munt sound, everything.
Some cocktail suggestions ep 9/10. the fartiest bestest bass sound ever. Ray.
Scars from falling down 7/10. a falling off but about 4 of the tracks are still a 10/10 in my book. The seeds were sown for the potty experimention to follow in...
Unlistenable 9/10. beautiful batshit bonkers. total free balls-in-the-wind creativity. About 4 unrecognisable CARS covers. Only available on CD for so long, when it was finally released on vinyl I almost barked my shins on my cock in my mad haste to secure a copy.

my take on Dinosaur Jr, makers of my 2nd favourite burnout music ever (after Neil Young)

You're Living All Over Me (1987) 10/10. Or 0/10. can't think of a single other band where the mood you're in completely dictates your enjoyment. Sometimes I come at this or "Bug" and its just gahhh fucken turn it off, these solos are goddamn painful. Yet other days its like the world's oldest most comfortable sofa
Bug (1988) ditto
Green Mind. only got the cd of this and it sounds like utterly shrill tinpot compressed dogshit so hard to judge
Beyond (2007) 8/10. EXTREMELY skeptical of a band comign back after 20 years but man they still got it
Farm (2009) 7/10. ditto. this is meaty as hell. fuck it is raucous
newest one "Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not" (2016) also on my wantlist
