Accolades for Hell and High Water
Hell and High Water beats their first one, Eastbound and Down, like Alexander de Large beating up drunks in 'Clockwork Orange.' You`ll hear classic rock and southern rock in the mix, and maybe a few things you aren`t expecting. The quiet sections fit right in, providing a breather from the trademark Throttlerod up-tempo piledrivers that fill in most of the disc. There`s a nice southern tint to the whole thing, but it doesn`t sound forced or like someone jumping on a bandwagon. Hell and High Water is well played, unpretentious, accessible without sounding like witless radio fodder and underground without being obtuse.
What I dug most about Throttlerod was the combination of the thick guitars and the (mostly) clean vocals. It gives them a pure, classic rock sound. These guys know how to write good hard rock, plain & simple. Hell and High Water has the perfect mix of riffs and hooks. Definitely in the top 10 of 2003.
It`s just so damned good. The songs are written extremely well, vocals are superb, and I love the lyrics. I had absolutely no expectations with this album, and now it`s blowing me away. A great rock n` roll record.
