Accolades for Split LP
This collaborative 12" from Comets on Fire and Burning Star Core is totally intense and insane. The first side is an amazing Hawkwind-esque freakout that is held together by a great, fluid bass part. Searing, wiggling, screeching, acid-laden guitar riffs fill the space creating an energetic, dizzying room full of sound, building and building in tension to the rapid-fire beat of the drummer. One of the greatest Comets on Fire songs yet.
The second side opens with a completely over-the-top Southern rock guitar riff. Its big thick sound gives meat to the song as the drummer pounds like a madman and some guys squeal distorted squeals in the background (why am I thinking of Deliverance?). The song disintegrates, grinding to a halt with an extended drum roll before bringing the hott lixx back again for a short outro. With half the side left, the bass player tries to get something started with a lurching, pounding bass part. Eventually drums, feedback, and devil screams join in, never breaking out of the lurch but creating a big, menacing cloud of ear-ringing noise.
