Astroqueen & Mammoth Volume
@ Belsepub (Kompaniet)
Gothenburg, Sweden
Friday April 20, 2001
Mammoth Volume had just released their first self titled album back then, and Astroqueen were about to release their first 7". That night Astroqueen opened for Unida, I hadnt heard any of their stuff back then... and I cant say that I remember that much from the gig, `cept that their sound was maybe a little more tripped out back then... it sounds much heavier to my ears now... Unida rocked the house that night at Musikens Hus... a little later that same night I saw Mammoth Volume for the first time (at an after hours gig at the same club as this release party gig, Belsepub), I had of course bought their debut and self titled album a while before this gig... but it seemed like nobody else in the audience that night had heard any of their tunes... it seemed like no-one paid any attention to what was happenin` on the stage... too bad... their loss...

Fast forward 18 months... this time they payed attention, and a whole bunch seemed to know the lyrics to the "older" tunes. Mammoth Volume played songs from all of their releases, including the upcoming album "A Single Book of Songs By Mammoth Volume", and if Im not mistaken, one from the "Demo CD-R"...
Last time I saw `em live they stood kinda still on stage (like most stoner bands), this time they moved about a lot more... And they most defintely rocked!!! Their live sound is much more raw and plenty heavier than the sound on their records... You wont find much of the progressive vibes in their live sets, and I guess its the right way to go... that stuff works great on their albums (especially the new one), but I dont think it would work that great live... at least not at a club gig... maybe at some outdoor festival gig on a warm summer day when you can sit on the grass (or smoke it if thats your preference, hehe) and chill with a beer... Anyways... It was great to finally get to see Mammoth Volume live again... and it was an awesome gig...

When it was time to for Astroqueen to enter the stage the crowd had turned a lot wilder... and of course there were a few assholes who slammed like crazy and did everything in their power to piss the real "stoner" audience off... I dont mind a little slammin now and then, as long as I dont have to take elbows in the back when Im trying to take a few pics... If the photos came out a little shakier than usual you know why. If it hadnt been for my brother, Daniel, and Ulrik from Generous Maria who stood in the way and "took care" of the worst slammers there wouldnt been any pictures at all...

Astroqueens set consisted mostly of songs from their upcoming album, but they also did a few of the older ones (youll find `em on various compilations and on their "Rufus..." 7")... If you look at their setlist (below), youll probably recognize one of the song titles as a classic song by XXXXX XXXXXXX (if you dont know which of the songs is the cover and by what band you probably made a mistake when you logged on to StonerRock.com and started reading this feature)...
Astroqueen have become much better live since I saw `em open for Unida. Maybe they couldve moved about a little more... but thats just a minor thing... This time they seemed more sure of themselves... and the new tunes definitely worked great live... I guess well see some killer shows (and albums) in the future if these dudes keeps at it...
