Accolades for And Blood Was Passion
Zebulon Pike share a bond with the proggier elements of Pelican, as well as the harmonized leads of Blind-era Corrosion of Conformity and the chugga-chugga thrust of classic Anthrax. The latter two aspects are intermittent, and due to the rapid-fire changes in the songs, not always noticeable. This is to the bands credit they keep things interesting and original. For those with an appreciation for demanding, intricate music, this disc is your thing. It may not be an immediate album, but its a deep one. And in case youre wondering, its also damn heavy.
This album is fuckin amazing! For those of you who like those instrumental prog/sludge stuff check it out.
Zebulon Pike set out to push the envelope by combining elements of prog rock (King Crimson, Flower Kings), obscure 70s rock (Necromandus, Sir Lord Baltimore, Dust), doom metal (Blood Farmers, The Obsessed) and avante guarde (Stockhousen, Reich, Schnittke) into music that is a unique fusion of styles and genres. Although these sound explorers are totally instrumental, there are more than a few songs that are very catchy, possessing that gloom doom rifftastic Sabbath-aura and the irresistible magnetic Karma To Burn/Spickle-like crunch. Built around force, technicality and groove Zebulon Pike rarely loses the listener and that deserves good marks. Inventive music that keeps us alert and wanting more from start to finish.
