This album is all you could hope for if you're searching for southern drenched rock with shades of hardcore, sludge, and punk. If you're looking for a comparable band, Alabama Thunderpussy, Down, and Weedeater fit the bill. Sofa King Killer have the dirty grooves of the first two groups and a singing style more reminiscent of Weedeater's Dixie Dave. Add to this a production job that makes it sound like the band recorded everything live in the studio, giving each instrument an equal footing, and you've got the makings for a stellar release. No doubt about it, Midnight Magic is a fucking killer album.

Sofa King Killer may not fit exactly into one subgenre pigeonhole, but they are definitely the sum of quite a few parts: namely, sludge, hardcore, metal, and boogie rock, with a smattering of psychedelia and stripped-down blues in there. What separates them from the rest of the pack is the idiosyncratic musicianship that each member of the band offers.
