Accolades for Let the Soul Out and Cut the Vein
A unique and fitting act, and certainly one of the most promising sludge bands since Cavity, Rabies Caste are pure ugliness and deliver prime brutality and agony. A channel for sheer aggression, they take their influences from only the heaviest bands: Neurosis, Godflesh, and Unsane. The Unsane inspiration cannot be denied and is here the most noticeable then any other, but put to effective use. The distorted vocal effects throughout give the entire effort an atmosphere of detachment and desensitization. Coupled with the bottom-low-end heaviness, jugular ripping speed, and suffocating power emitting from the music, and not letting up a second for the duration of the album, you are left with a subconscious feeling of just being beaten into submission after listening. Where Neurosis has always been about finding an inner and deeper spirtuality within their music, Rabies Caste seem to be the complete opposite. Like the title says, they'll extinguish your soul and leave your body dead and cold.
Sludge and doom are the first two words that come to mind during the listening of Let the Soul Out and Cut the Vein. At parts, the album can be broken down into sounding like odd versions of songs by Isis, Neurosis, Godflesh, Will Haven, Cathedral and maybe even Bloodlet, at moments. Very slow, very downtuned and a bit off-timed. The unvaried shrill shouts of frontman Dave K definitely sound at home on this disc, aiding in that deep south dirge feel. Fans of the sludge and doom, especially Cathedral, will go apeshit over this.
