Kyuss Info

[Kyuss] [News] [Discography] [Trades] [Contact] [Me Me Me] [Conspiracy]

Hi. This page is the index to a "cut down" version of my website at www.dot.net.au/~kyuss The reason for going to the trouble of building another version is that my original pages on the Dot server are only accessible up until I have more than 300Mb worth of traffic at which point (usually around the 17th) the site is suspended until the beginning of the next month. The site i have here has much the same information as the Dot one although it is not nearly so extensive. The old Elektra web site is not there, the interviews are not available, the images are not present and the sounds are not accessible either. The reason for this is that I cant afford to pay for another server and Dominic Giampaolo was kind enough to donate some of his server space to running this site. I didn't particularly want to burden him with a 25 Mb web site like I have at Dot.
Dear visitor, I read recently a cool header to someones site. (i shan't name the band in question) It went like so:

"Hi, my name is __Jay__ (insert name here). Now, the site you are entering is a site based around __Kyuss__ (insert band here). Although that implies that I am an authority on the subject, it actually is just not the case. I am merely an avid fan of the band and, as such, am proud to be a part of promotion for the members in their current projects and promotion of their collective past releases."

I have much help from everyone who kindly visits my shores, in the maintenance and improvement of the existing pages. I am not in the band, I don't know the band, I havn't even managed to see the band (through no real fault of my own as you shall read later). But I DO love the band or actually, (more importantly) what they left behind.

Oh yeah yawll. In case you failed to notice, the site you are entering contains a little Java. Therefore if you have just been browsing H/P/V/A/C sites or the like and so have the Java + JavaScript options turned off in your General Preferences, it should be necessary to turn them on so as to see the pages as they were intended.
The computer I use is just a P133 PC running Win95 and the resolution it looks best in because of what I am running is 800x600 24bit truecolor. Oh yeah, Large Fonts too because of the 15" monitor.
The site is maintained when I am able to fit it in with other activities like UNI work, and I often neglect to change the date at the bottom of this page. Don't trust it.

Hi,
Here is a not-so-brief story about the band known as Kyuss.

Back in 1993 when I was still living in the small outback town of Walgett I went to visit a couple of my friends who, at the time, lived in the nearby (about 100Km away) town of Lightning Ridge.

When we went to one of their houses (Tonys') he said that he had come across a really cool, bottom heavy, grooving band and had in fact bought their then new album Blues For the Red Sun which he found on cassette in the only store in town that sold CDs and Cassettes.

Having not heard of this band before I was of course interested in hearing them because at the time I was still experimenting with new bands (at the age of 15 who wasn't?) and so when the first rolling bass feedback fed out of the speakers I was captivated by the smooth, growling, relatively simple, but emotive tunes which issued forth.

From the adolescent riffing of Green Machine to the ingenious dynamics in Nick Oliveri's Bass and Josh Homme's churning guitars in Freedom Run, and the delicate picking of the 30 second piece of perfection that Capsized is, the album held all of our attention through it's entire 51 minutes of playing time.

When finally the closing bars of Mondo Generator squealed away into silence and the intonation of Josh's "Yeah" disappeared there was a feeling of the emptiness left inside of us akin to the feeling when a well written novel draws to its conclusion and all of the loose ends draw together to make the tale complete.

This was my first introduction to the band KYUSS and as is shown here it isn't an experience I will likely forget. When the Metallica tour rolled around to the Australasian leg I was still not really that impressed with their (metallica's) music and definitely not enough so as to go and see them live. Unfortunately what I didn't know was that the best band in existence was supporting them and receiving very little publicity for doing so, in the advertising leading up to the concerts.

Now, as I have had the experience of talking to various people who were actually interested enough in Metallica to attend one of their concerts there were mixed responses to the performance of Kyuss on those dates.

One of the guys who I recently met to play music with was one of the Kyuss freaks that I have come across who actually enjoyed their performance. They played songs from the then current Blues For The Red Sun and some from Wretch and their stage prescence was amazing. John would get up in front of the band and his bellows would fill the amphitheatre mixing perfectly with the groove of the song and when his part was done he would go off to the side of the stage and mellow to the music which they all enjoyed to their fullest.

A sorrowful Kyuss fan who went mainly to see them, as he was not a great follower of Metallica, was sorely disappointed when the might of the down tuned quartet was somewhat stifled by the fact that the volume was down to such an extent that it was possible for the people in seats 20 metres in front of the stage to actually talk over the top of them. Of course Metallica wanted to have a grand impact when they set foot on stage and 150db of sound issues from the PA but to stifle such a band as Kyuss by low volume (when the Entertainment Centre where they were playing seats 15000 people), well it would seem to be a bit of a waste of time to put them on the bill in the first place when this was Metallica's intention.

Another person that I currently work with went to the concert with no inclination of what the band Kyuss was like and the fact that the volume was so muted really reduced the impact of the dynamics present in their music on him. As we all know Live music is of a somewhat lower fidelity than that of recorded music, as a rule, and therefore in a venue as big as the Entertainment Centre the music must be very loud indeed to be able to express the nuances present on closer listening of Kyuss. In fact I recently made him, under duress, listen to Size Queen and One Inch Man in an effort to introduce him to the finery of more recent Kyuss music but the original experience with them at Metallica made his diagnosis "on doog" (for the dummies "no good")

Really, If anybody that visits these pages knows of anything new or at all possibly of interest about any of the bands/things talked about here ESPECIALLY Kyuss, since much of my time and money is spent in the pursuit of anything to do with this wonderful band, it would give me no end of interest to hear from you.
(you know how)

Thanks in advance...

If the guest book isn't working, I'd have to say that LPage would have it up and running about maybe 10% of the time. Don't be surprised if you can't access it or if you do, if there is nothing there.
