John: Okay, who are you and what do you play?
Doug: I play guitar and sing.
Chris: Drums.
Eric: Guitar.
Matt: Bass.
John: How did you guys get started? When did you form and why?
Doug: We formed with a different line up, probably like four years ago, but it didn`t really get good or serious until we got Chris Williams playing drums. Which was about two years ago.
John: After Human Being Lawnmower?
Doug: Yeah, we played together in Human Being Lawnmower.
John: How would you describe your sound to the average asshole out there?
Chris: That`s tough.
Doug: Heavy. Noisy.
Eric: We sound like we`re from Erie.
Chris: It`s tough without sounding so cliche.
Doug: It`s a mixture of... maybe doom, but also not having all the songs sound the same.
Eric: We all listen to tons of much different kinds of music, and kind of draw that in.
John: Who would you say your biggest influences are?
Eric: Like band-wise?
John: Yeah, band-wise.
Eric: I`d say Cavity would be an influence. I wouldn`t say we sound like them, but they`re an influence.
Chris: My biggest would probably be Cro-Mags and a lot of old New York hardcore.
Doug: I`m really into the band Dead Guy. Rorschach . The kind of noisy hardcore stuff.
Eric: Even some Godflesh.
John: Cable?
Doug: Yeah, Cable. Every time you see me I wear their fucking shirt.
Chris: Leeway.
Doug: (something unintelligible)
John: Neenah Cherry?
Doug: Don`t print that!
John: (laughs) No who does the writing in the band?
Eric: Mostly Doug.
Doug: Well, we all arrange the songs. It`s rarely that I`ll have something in my head and we use it that way. It`s usually dissected and changed around. Eric writes riffs, I write riffs. Chris will have ideas for guitar parts that he`ll even just hum to us or tell us.
Eric: I guess you can say it`s pretty collaborative, but as far as riffs go, Doug`s a riff machine.
John: (to Matt) Now when did you get to the band?
Matt: I`m kind of a temp guy.
Chris: He`s actually not even allowed to answer questions. We gave him the option of joining, but he hasn`t told us yet, so until he tells us, just ignore him.
Doug: He`s actually paying us to be with us right now.
John: Now what happened to the other bassist? Or other bassists?
Chris: He joined the Christian movement.
Matt: They treat all their bass players like shit. Like Metallica.
Doug: Non-committal. Not responsible.
Chris: He didn`t seem to be as into it as the three of us were.
Doug: He actually told us you can print this - that he was telling people that he was in the hospital for a week and that`s why we kicked him out.
Actually, don`t print that.
Eric: Matt`s helping us out with the tour with the option of joining.
John: So how`d you guys hook up with MeteorCity?
Chris: The demo we put on StonerRock.com, there was some talk about that. And then Jadd contacted me and asked if I`d send him a copy. Which I did. He actually liked it a lot, and his guitar played really liked it. Spiritu his band were getting ready to record some material. They didn`t have enough for a full-length, thought about a split, and thought... I guess we were the band that came to mind.
Eric: It was pretty unexpected.
Chris: Very much so. I don`t think we`re a typical MeteorCity type band.
John: How`s the response to the split been?
Chris: Review-wise?
John: Yeah.
Eric: Pretty well.
Chris: Actually, really, really well. I guess I`ve seen only one that`s been so-so, and the rest have been pretty good.
Doug: We had one bad review, and it was on a website that sold shoes. Fuck the shoe-makers. I`m serious.
John: How about Dwelling in Doubt? Has that been officially reviewed?
Eric: Yeah, July 11, I think.
Chris: We had this one mixed review by this one guy, he didn`t like all the electronic stuff.
Doug: That`s bullshit!
John: Oh, one of those pretentious asshat, hiding behind a keyboard, little man with big words types?
Eric: Just so you know, we did that not because we needed filler.
John: So there`s all sorts of ambient backgrounds?
Eric: Sure.
John: Now this is your first tour?
Doug: Yes.
John: How many dates are you doing?
Chris: Actual shows? Eleven or 12. Fourteen or 15 days out.
John: Long term touring plans?
Doug: This is about what we can handle.
Eric: Unfortunately, work is an issue.
Doug: Some of us have jobs that we like.
John: What`s that like?
Doug: It`s strange. I`ve worked at jobs that I`ve hated, but now I have one that I like, and I don`t want to lose it. Because it`s awesome.
Eric: I wouldn`t mind losing my job, but I`ve got bills I have to pay. You know you don`t make any money doing this.
John: Who have you been playing with on this tour?
Doug: The first show was Sea Beast and a band called Goreality.
Chris: Bible of the Devil had to cancel that show.
Doug: Second shift we played with Ocean.
John: You got something going on in New York, right?
Chris: Palace in Thunderland and Sourvein.
Eric: Agnosis.
Chris: Chicago with Unfortunaut and Salt of the Earth, which should be a really good show?
John: Anyone in particular you want to tour with going forward?
Doug: Neenah Cherry.
Chris: I don`t know. That`s a tough question.
Eric: Ocean and Deadbird.
Chris: Anyone who will have us, really.
Doug: We`re really just kind of surprised at the response. We like our music, but personally for me it went further than I thought it would have. |
