| Rob: How did Supershine start?
Bruce: Well, It started as an idea, well- it wasn`t even that I just started writing songs for...as something I knew I wanted to do, as some kind of a project Once I had about... three or four songs of just music written, I started thinking, well I gotta figure out who I am going to have play on this record... My first thought was Doug, from King`s X, who I had come to know over the years, who has come to see Trouble a few times, and uh- I was a big fan of his singing with King`s X so he was the first person I had asked... that was in `97... things kind of went from there.
Rob: Wow, you got Doug from King`s X huh?
Bruce: Well, he`s an amazing singer, and I knew he was a Trouble fan, so I thought that he might be interested, but I wasn`t sure, but I thought that I would ask him, and it turned he was...
Rob: Well that`s pretty cool, because he has been around and he is , uh, old school...
Bruce: Well, I kind of see myself as being old school too, I`m very 70`s rock influenced... some people thought it was a weird combination because he is so soulful, but I`m a big fan of that you know, but it was right up my alley as what I wanted to do...
Rob: When I downnloaded a Supershine song, I was like- who the hell is that? I recognized his voice because King`s X had some pretty popular videos in the late 80`s and Doug`s gotta a pretty undeniable voice that you know who he is when you hear it...plus he is a blazing bass player too...
Bruce: Yes he is, he is a very top of the line musician...
Rob: Plus he`s left handed too (hehehe....)...
Bruce: I always liked left handed guitar players because it looked different...
Rob: You have any plans on playing shows or touring or...
Bruce: Well we are trying to figure out if we can, Doug is very busy and he has been on tour since July with King`s X, So once he gets home in October sometime which, well then he is finishing his solo record which he started before this, and then ..well after that (hehehe...) then I am hoping that there is enough time in his open schedule where we can do a few dates, um it`s very ,limited... When I first asked him if he was interested in doing this, I had heard through the grapevine that King`s X was breaking up and that was 97 and back then, they were touring for the last record that they had done for Atlantic then and He had told me that they did consider breaking up and that they changed their minds... He said he would still wanted to do it, but it was a side project for sure...
Rob: and you figured...
Bruce: And I figured I don`t care if it is a number one thing for him or just a side project, because I was just happy to be working for him, and that is what I wanted to do...
Rob: So is Trouble not going to do anything ever again?
Bruce: Oh- I wouldn`t say that...we all keep in touch, I mean I keep in touch with all the guys... I guess that eventually something will happen and we will get together and make a record or something...
Rob: Isn`t there another guy from Trouble in Supershine, right?
Bruce: Jeff Olsen played some drums on the record, he played on the first 2 Trouble records...
Rob: How do you think the Supershine sound is compared to what you have done in the past with Trouble? Is it a more developed sound, or is it more personal?
Bruce: It`s probably a little more personal, uh it`s very similar to Trouble just because I wrote a lot of thing for Trouble... With Doug it`s like a little like Trouble with a real soulful singer...
Rob: you have any releases coming out?
Bruce: The record came out September 13th...
Rob: And that`s on Metal Blade?
Bruce: Yeah...
Rob: And what`s it called?
Bruce: Just... Supershine...
Rob: Self-Titled?
Bruce: Yeah...
Rob: Well I just wanted to see what you were up to, and know what the future of Supershine had in store...
Bruce: It`s gonna be more than a one record thing, we signed for four so...and touring we will have to wait and see what happens...
Rob: Are you writing for a second record now?
Bruce: I have a couple of things I have written that I haven`t given to Doug yet. Yeah- I got stuff in mind...
Rob: So you write most of the music, do you write melody lines for the vocals or...
Bruce: For the most part, and Doug writes the lyrics... There were about three songs I wrote lyrics for...kind of a Plant/Page sorta deal you know...
Rob: ...you kind of let Doug do what he can?
Bruce: Right, The only reason why I had vocal melody lines suggestions was just to help him, I`d say just use these as a guide line and if you got something better than just do it...
Rob: You guys quite a distance from each other don`t you?
Bruce: Yeah he lives in Houston Texas and I live in Chicago, so...
Rob: Right! So it puts a damper on trying to write music then...
Bruce: Well what we did is I would send him Guitar and Drums on a Dat tape, and he would dump that to his 8 track and add bass and vocals and send it to me...and he would blow me away every time, I`d think that I sent him something pretty good music, but then when I got it back I`d be `Damn man...`...
Rob: So he would alter it in a way you wouldn`t think about...
Bruce: yep, yep... well we would sit back and laugh about it...
Rob: The songwriting of the future...
Bruce: Well the new technology allows us to do that sort of thing now a days...
