Accolades for The Trident (Color)
The Trident has its slow, downtuned moments, but interspersed are jagged edges of speed. They meld the two contrasting styles together surprisingly well. Like Buried at Sea, Indian, and Ocean, Unearthly Trance knows how to push the heavy when going full-on doom, suffocating you with pounding rhythms and distortion while offering brief respites in the empty spaces between notes. And like Mastodon, they also excel at playing complex, fast riffs. They even broach upon Sunn0))) territory. Add to that music prowess the usual guttural, throat full of blood and glass vocals and youve got the makings of a winner. This is some uncompromising music. It exists in a category unto itself, one thats best defined simply as heavy.
Unearthly Trance continue to push the boundaries of what doom can do. Haunting glacial paces, blackened interludes, thrashy moments. These guys are darn near undefinable. Excellent stuff.
