Accolades for Pigs of the Roman Empire
This album will consume you with its opening track as it's what the band has been more than capable of doing for years, and that's pummeling one's ass. The further descent into the darker ambient sounds which Lustmord brings to the table shows the direction that the Melvins are not afraid to venture into. Mesmerizing. Dark. Trippy. Heavy. Atmospheres quickly evaporate into some of the heavy familar Melvinesque sound we have all come to know and love alongside some unique approaches to experimental jams. Songs structures are prevalent as this isn't a 'noise' album, in one sense, as it is in another. I am not afraid to say this may be some of the strongest songs they've done to to this point on this release, and that is spanning a lot of material.
I have to hand it to the Melvins for not being afraid to take it one step further and unload one of the most intriguing and heavy albums I've heard in quite some time. File with your experimental/ambient/drone albums...and put it right up front. This may be the masterpiece we thought we already got from them.
