After listening to Alter by Knut, I felt like my soul was ripped out of my left nostril and placed between two pieces of stale bread and offered back to me as a life sandwich. Experimental heavy music that is daring and yet fully engaging, Alter is a big remix album filled with superb asides of Knuts brilliant psychosis. A virtual whos who of experimental noise pioneers were assembled for this collage. Dalek and Deadverse are present twisting and turning Knut into some bastard step-child of Godflesh. Lucas Tamarit and Julien Sauser hip it up with laptop beats and noisy synth breaks. French electronic artist Dither starts off the album almost leaving behind the heavy beats hes renowned for. Former Godflesh member and current Jesu master musician JK Broadrick offers a caustic scream fest that rips skulls off of torsos. Napalm Deaths Mick Harris lays the beats on thick with bleeps and booms caressing in an almost Aphex Twin-like embrace.

The remixes on Alter span a wide range of styles from noisy cut ups of the original tracks to versions that take just a few samples and create something altogether new, to versions that make Knut sound like a guest artist on someone else's record. Dlek and Justin Broadrick turn in mixes that sound as though they could easily be Dlek or Godflesh songs with someone else singing, which is fine with me and allows producers with a well-established sound to stamp their mark. In the end Knut's remix project has made me interested in checking out the original material that inspired it so that feels like a mission accomplished to me.
