hello friends...
some interesting things going on in the adbullah camp.
i'll try to be brief.
first of all, the website has been entirely
redesigned. so if you haven't done so already, peruse
the rest of the pages and check out the new look. drop
us a line and let us know what you think. remember:
your opinion counts!
lo and behold. the fine, fine people at barnes and
noble have decided to publish a very nice coffee table
book dedicated to the mystical art of heavy metal
music entitled "the encyclopedia of heavy metal."
304 full-color oversized pages chock full of photos,
write-ups, posters and bios on everyone from slayer to
slipknot, black sabbath to led zeppelin, and everyone
else in between. and guess who got the very first entry
in the book? that's right, your pals in abdullah! we're
on the same spread as accept and ac/dc! no foolin'! and
just to put the icing on the cake we're even mentioned
on the back cover by one mr. ronnie james dio himself.
ever hear of that guy? suffice it to say, we consider
this a huge honor and sincerely extend our gratitude
to the b&n corporation and specifically author extraordinaire,
dan bukszpan. mr. bukszpan, your check is in the mail.
for more info click here.
in other interesting abdullah sightings, we were also
mentioned in the october 25th issue of none other than
billboard magazine! in his "cleveland rocks! but its music
also grooves sways and awes each year" article, john benson
writes: "the local concert market is also healthy, with
such bands as disengage, leo, abdullah, gatlin and the sign
offs, possessing local followings." okay.... so it's not
much, but still... billboard freakin' magazine! we'll take
what we can get. it's not like we have managers, publicists
or attorneys working for us. so a tip of our forties to
mr. benson for seeing fit to drop our name nonetheless! here's to you, our friend.
and finally, even though we are now label-less and
have no set date for our next release (although we
will have something out by 2004... promise), we have a
handful of compilation appearances in the works. first
off is the as yet untitled comp on obskure sombre
records due out by the end of this month. we've
contributed an unreleased track called "the heart
denies" which is a cross bewteen trouble and
radiohead. believe that! for more info click here.
also out this month is the traktor7 records (headed by
one jonah jenkins of only living witness/milligram
infamy) "theft, arson, vice, murder and death"
compilation. 22 bands on limited edition hand-stamped digipacks.
our track will be "burning away" from our latest demo.
for more info click here.
then, early 2004 will see the release of bully
magazine's second installment of the "rebirth of the
heavy" comp being released by the music cartel. as you
may recall, volume one included such heavyweights as
electric wizard, the sabians, antiseen, electric
frankenstein, etc. and this one promises to be just as
massive! we'll be contributing a brand spanking new
track for this one as well! stay tuned for more
details.
and last but certainly not least, "we reach: the music
of the melvins" tribute comp will be seeing the light
of day sometime in 2004 on fractured transmitter
records (headed by j-mann of mushroomhead). this one
is gonna be insane with bands like the dillinger
escape plan, high on fire, meshuggah, strapping young
lad, keelhaul, meatjack, dog fashion disco, and
disengage already confirmed. we will be covering
"pitfalls in serving warrants" from the "honky" lp!
for more info click here.
that's it for now. take care and, as always, thanks
for your attention and support!

people have been saying nice things about our new
demo. seriously, check it out:
"More zoom and less doom? Abdullah's metamorphosis
from doom deluxe to heavy metal rock destroyers is now complete?
Well, it would appear pretty nearly so. On the heels
of their Meteor City metal release last year, this 2003
demo apparently closes the door on the pure doom direction
of old. There's still some elements of doom here and
there in a couple of breakdowns and riffs, but Abdullah
is mostly a tight, tough motherfucker of a hard rock metal monster now.
There's even some punk energy and fury forged into the
tunes. Jeff is in fine voice, as always, Alan rips
open a can of heavy duty leads, and Jamie steps away
from his legendary Boulder long enough to hammer the
tubs like a natural man. Hey, I loved the Abdullah
doom sound as much as anybody, but this incarnation
hits harder and rocks taller. Good bands do not allow
themselves to become stagnant. Abdullah has evolved
into a metal crushing, hard and heavy rock band, and
I admire the creativity and courage it took to make
the transition. Maybe a bit less cerebral than before,
but they more than make up for it by putting their heart,
soul, and guts into this manly rock machine.
A+ all the way." - Glenn Tillman, Tangerine Magazine
"Right on first listen these songs just suck you right
in. They are really that cool. Wow, this is wicked
music! Jeff's vocals are a little more pushed back
than normal, giving the music a little less of
Abdullah's normal metal edge, especially on 'Ribbons'
and 'Burning Away'. The music and the execution of
same carries a ton of energy. I like it because it's
not music that takes the listener for granted.
Abdullah have seriously outdone themselves. I think
these five
demo songs are some of the best songs I've heard
lately.
Maybe the guys are becoming more confident in their
sound. Definitely the sound has matured and gotten
bigger. I think it's time for Abdullah to become
serious contenders in the 'kick your ass' underground
music world - there is so much diversity here. One
minute it's the semi garage, old school punk and 80's
cockiness of 'Ribbons' and then it's the full on doom
of 'Burning Away'. Even more rocking is 'Bones and
Ashes'- a death/doom crusher. This is the best yet
from Abdullah in my humble opinion. If this one
doesn't grab you... well there is no excuse for you.
This, even despite the bad production.
I very much recommend getting this when it's
available. If you were a skeptic before this will show
you. Ummm doom....." - Stonerrock Chick,
stonerrockchick.com
since it doesn't look like we're going to have a new
album out anytime soon, if anyone would like a copy of
said demo, just email us your snail mail addy and
we'll get one out to you poste haste.
the seven inchers are in!!!
thanks to the fine, fine people at obskure sombre
records, abdullah has finally been pressed on 7 inch
wax. it's a split with montreal doomsters, nephusim
and is now available for purchase. the price is a mere
$4.00 (postage paid) in the u.s. and $6.00 (postage
paid) abroad. the ep is limited to a scant 500 copies
so get 'em while you can! email us for more info.
abdullah in metal manicas magazine!
the wonderful and lovely sue nolz wrote a review for
this past june's brave words and bloody knuckles six
pack weekend metal extravaganza and was nice enough to
devote a few words to abdullah. check it:
"The night's featured band, Abdullah, was another
reason I made the trip - and the
group's live performance did not disappoint. The
subtle power displayed on 2002's Graveyard Poetry came
bursting out with a vengeance in the live setting,
with vocalist Jeff Shirilla's whirling dervish onstage
antics being a thrill to watch as the set unfolded. A
speeded up version of "A Dark But Shining Sun" the
godly "Black Helicopters" achieving new heights of
heaviness, and the NWOBHM-inspired "Strange
Benedictions" resounding to perfection were the set's
main standouts. Strong new songs had us convinced that
Abdullah is one of the most important up-and-coming
fringe metal bands out there today."
how 'bout that? our new demo also made it to the
number 1 spot in her playlist for that issue! hooray!
and finally on the local front,
we'll be playing a few dates in rocktober.
specifically:
friday, october 17th
peabody's
w/ iron boss and others
saturday, october 25th
the phantasy
w/ the tumors, chrome kickers and others
will we ever play out of the city limits of cleveland?
that's a good question.

08/12/03
hello friends and loved ones...
just a quick and friendly reminder that abdullah will
be headlining "dead america '03" at the grog shop this saturday, the 16th of august.
it's a 3 day rawk festival of sorts and should be a real cool time. some of the other
bands on saturday's bill include amps ii eleven, the jacknife power-bombs and chrome kickers.
rawk indeed. so come on out and have yo-self a good time. remember, don't be a part of the
solution, be a part of the problem.

07/03/03
its about time we had a 7 inch out, huh? well, thanks
to charles and his fine label obskure sombre
(come.to/obskure), the daydream has become a reality.
coming in mid-july we will be appearing on one side of
a split 7-inch with montreals nephusim. if youd
like, you can purchase a copy through obskure sombre
or directly through us. email for more info. the tune
on the ep was written and recorded specifically for
this release. it is our final ode to the british metal
of days gone by. its time to move on.
also, we will be appearing on a compilation cd being
released this summer... again... by our frinds at
obskure sombre. our contribution will be another
unreleased track and well post more info in the
coming weeks. there is also talk of a melvins
tribute.... but ive said too much already.
locally, we will be playing an early show at the rock
n roll hall of fame in scenic downtown cleveland. the
date: wednesday july 23rd, 2003. the time: 6:00pm
sharp. the bands: abdullah, boulder and keelhaul.
admission: gratis. it will be a nice, incestuous
affair and well have you home in plenty of time to
get enough sleep for school or work. all you jobless motherfuckers are screwed.
that is all.

hello friends...
as i mentioned in the last news update, the fine
people at scene
magazine have nominated abdullah for best local metal
band. they now
have a ballot online where you can cast your vote at:
http://www.clevescene.com/musicawards/musicpoll03/
if you could please find it in your hearts to vote for
us, we would be
much obliged.
thank you so much.
good day.

06/05/03
A new interview from Montreal-based print zine "Motel 16" has been added.
|
|
05/30/03
hello devil worshippers...
just a couple things.
first off, scene magazine was nice enough to nominate
abdullah for best cleveland metal band. they are
having a showcase of other nominees at the grog shop
next friday, june 6th. also appearing will be allergic
to whores and red giant. we go on at 11:30 or so.
please come.
secondly, the brave words bloody knuckles warm-up show
on june 12th at the odeon in the cleveland flats is
rapidly approaching. this is actually a pretty big
deal for us as there will be label reps from nuclear
blast, century media and others in attendance to check
us out. your support at this show would be very
pleasing to us. a strong showing of fans will
certainly be a feather in our caps to these dudes.
help us get a better record deal. well pay ya back
some day. honest. we will be going on around 11:00 and
we have tickets for sale if youd like to side-step
ticketmaster charges. they are $6.00. cheap! this will
be a killer show with many killer bands and a bunch of
canadians. come on out and join in the hootenanny.
some other cool stuff has been going on. our friend
pat lewis (mushroomheads sound guy) was cool enough
to invite us out to their studio to record 5 new songs
(well... one of ems a misfits cover). in my humble
opinion, this is the best stuff weve ever done. pat
did an excellent job catching our live feel which i
think is misrepresented on past recordings (probably
because we didnt record them live... duh). these were
also the first studio tracks with aaron on guitar and
jamie on drums. were hoping to continue recording
with pat and possibly complete our next album at
shroom studios. we will keep you posted.
finally, i want to thank everyone for coming out to
our peabodys show last monday. that was definitely
one of our best shows and we had a blast. thanks so
much for the support. much love, much love. here is a
nice review and some photos
of the cuddly event courtesy of bob ignizio.
that is all for now, dear friends. thanks for
listening and well see you soon.

04/24/03
just got news that the 2nd stage at the metal gods
show this saturday has been cancelled and we can thank
the return of the headbanger's ball for it. they're
taping the first return show there at the
anthrax/motorhead show and need to do rewiring and
renovations to the ballroom side of the club. bitter
irony.

this review comes courtesy of the lovely gail worley
via her column at starpolish.com, an industry site
that looks out for emerging artists. ms. worley also
writes for rollingstone.com, rockpile, mk ultra, as
well as numerous other publications, and just happens
to be a very cool human being. we are very glad to
have her on our side:
"Bands like Abdullah are all the proof you need that
Cleveland rocks. This band has mastered the elusive
art of ass-kicking Groove Oriented Stoner Metal,
creating a sound akin to Hawkwinds "Psychedelic
Warlords Disappear In Smoke"-meets-Monster Magnet with
a generous homage to Ozzy in his halcyon days!
Whoo-ya! Abdullah are simply the best band of this
genre Ive found on Starpolish and they deserve to
stand as heirs to the Throne of a band as great as
Soundgarden. Jeff Shirilla sings like a metal god and
everyone else in the group plays like their lives
depend on getting to the next outrageous, skull
splitting riff. Sadly, there are only two songs posted
on Starpolish out of 14 tracks available on their
unreal CD, Graveyard Poetry: "Black Helicopters" --
which is a head trip and a half -- and the
acid-flashback inducing "A Dark But Shining Sun." If
you dig heavy psychedelic stoner metal you should just
buy the CD because Abdullah are a heavy metal fans
wet dream. A+."

were pleased to announce that jameson walters (from our pals boulder)
has taken over drum duties in
abdullah. hes debuting this saturday at our gig with mushroomhead. what a trial by fire. weve been
friends with jamie for years, and those of you taking notes may remember that he played bass on our
debut, so we couldnt be happier to have him aboard. abdullah is quickly becoming a band of cleveland
all-stars what with members from keelhaul, vanduls ugainst alliteracy and now boulder among the ranks.
were already hard at work on new material and hope to have a new record out by the end of the year.
speaking of records, graveyard poetry is doing pretty well in the press. its been picked as one of
the albums of the year by several zines including metal maniacs (onstands now!), brave words & bloody
knuckles, unrestrained, cleveland scene, and ezines like chaos realm, utter trash and knac.com. hooray.
peace and love,
your friends in abdullah

Graveyard Poetry is reviewed in the new issue of Metal Maniacs (March 2003 cover date), available now.
Only once ever several years does an album come along that is so in tune with your own resonant frequency you would swear it was created for you alone. When I heard Abdullah's Graveyard Poetry, I was blindsided by the subtle enormity of it's power, helpless to move or think or do anything but listen and feel the sound washing over me. Hungrily, I played it over and over again, am still playing it almost daily, the songs now planted permanently in my consciousness. I find the melodies entering my thoughts unbidden, bringing me a moment's joy as I sludge through my "day job" grind or wash up the dishes after dinner. Will Graveyard Poetry speak to you, resonate within you and mesmerize you the way it does me? That I cannot answer, although I certainly hope you'll explore the possibility.
In an attempt to explain the music itself, beyond the overall feeling it stirs, let me begin by saying that vocalist Jeff Shirilla has the most beautifully expressive voice I've heard in eons. In tone he compares to Dax Riggs (ex-Acid Bath) at his best and most inflective. But where Dax always left you feeling down, Jeff's is a voice to soothe the soul. It never gets abrasive or shrill, even on a fast-paced track like "Guided By The Spirit." As the principal songwriter in the band, he carries his vision through his vocals, adding that much more power to the performance. Though the poetic lyrics and their deeply spiritual meanderings are a story for another day, songs with titles like "A Dark But Shining Sun," "Behold A Pale Horse" and "Secret Teachings of Lost Ages" are clearly not your average, "Hey Bud, let's party and rock 'n roll."
Together with Jeff are three outstanding musicians who play a brilliant, inspired blend of modern doomy rock melded with textbook Diamond Head/Angel Witch NWOBHM. Believe it! The charging riffs that embody "Deprogramed" and "Strange Benedictions" are the most telling examples, but the essence of the great British movement is threaded throughout this amazing album. Guitarist Alan Seibert's clean, true guitar sound and flawless leads, along with Ed Stephens' impeccable basswork and the understated drumming of Jim Simonian, certainly hearkens back to better days, musically speaking at least. Where many bands today are simply tuning down to create a heavy sound, Abdullah crushes them all through mood, atmosphere and meaning.
And so from somewhere in Ohio comes a band that matters. A band that speaks softly, carries a big stick and is waiting to pummel you with it. A sleeping giant has awakened, and you have been warned. -- Sue Nolz

Abdullah is among the top local artists of 2002 in Scene magazine:
Abdullah, Graveyard Poetry (Meteor City): Those who would lump Abdullah in with
the sticky-fingered stoner-rock set are as high as they incorrectly assume this
band to be. Sure, there are plenty of big riffs -- as fuzzy as a hesher's short-term
memory -- but Abdullah, buoyed by frontman Jeff Shirilla's sterling upper-register
delivery, is more about dynamics than dimebags.
See the complete article here.
Abdullah is part of the 2002 retrospective at Roadburn. Here's Abdullah's
entry:
The year of our lord 2002: recorded another record ['Graveyard Poetry'], shed old skin,
played shows to no one, played shows to alot of people, load in, load out, did well in
print, sounded good on paper, made noise with new friends, drove aimlessly, crossed borders,
got snowed out, met cool people, met not-so-cool people, double-crossed, encouraged,
frustrated, complacent, imbibed stuff, stepped into puddles, into oceans and reached
out with dirty hands trying to get people to listen.

"Went to a show at the Cleveland Agora again last night. Another Mother played first
and of course I missed them, Abdullah was next. Bass solo?! Who does bass solo's?
Abdullah does bass solo's and if you're going to do something like that you'd better
pull it off. They went beyond pulling it off, incredible, as was most of their set.
Abdullah is Cleveland heavy rock, pay attention."

have completed the mastering of "Graveyard Poetry."
Now it's time to play the waiting game until the
release date of September 30th rolls around. The new
record will be released once again by MeteorCity in
the states and PLU/Century Media in Europe. A close
friend of the band commented that the new stuff sounds
like Acid Bath meets Diamond Head and that sounds okay
to us! Check back to the site in the summer months and
we'll post some sample clips.
Also, it hasn't been 100% confirmed yet, but it looks
like we may be headed out for a small east coast tour
with Boulder at the end of the summer. It will
primarily focus on the southern states and as soon as
we have more info we'll post it here at the site.
In the meantime, we will continue to be playing one
off shows in the Northeast Ohio area as well as some
stops in D.C., Chicago and West Virginia. Here are a
few local gigs for the month of June:
June 13th at the Hard Rock Cafe in Cleveland, Ohio
June 14th at the Phantasy in Cleveland, Ohio with NY's Brand New Sin
June 21st at the Avenue in Kent, Ohio with Centrifuge and NOLA's Spickle
June 28th at Gatsby's in Mentor with Ivory Hall
Also confirmed is an August 17th gig at the Monkey in Huntington, WV. More info will be posted closer to the date.

As of April 20, 2002, Abdullah has re-entered Suma
Sound Recording in the deep, dark woods of
Painesville, Ohio to commence recording on their
second release for MeteorCity Records, entitled
"Graveyard Poetry." The new album will consist of 13
tracks oscillationg somehwere in the stratosphere of
doom, sludge and New Wave of British Heavy Metal. The
last time around the band concentrated on their
unapologetic statement of brooding and despair, but
this time felt compelled to give air to some new
voices. Expect the album out by late summer of 2002.
Abdullah also has a handful of live dates coming up.
Here are the details:
May 22nd @ The Beachland Ballroom w/Bottom & Evil Beaver
15711 Waterloo Rd. * Cleveland * 216-383-1124
June 14th @ Phantasy Niteclub w/Brand New Sin
11802 Detroit Ave * Cleveland * (216)228-6300
June 21st @ The Avenue w/Spickle & Centrifuge
626 N. Water St. * Kent, OH * 330-676-0069
Also, the band would like to thank everyone who stuck
around for our performance at this year's Metal
Meltdown in New Jersey. Frankly, we were surprised at
the great reception and turnout we received amidst the
horde of death metal bands. Special thanks to our
stage manager who gave us a 45 minute set rather than
the usual 20! We had a great time and hope to return
next year.
