Imagine Kyuss meets Converge, with the thick riffs of the former and the swinging rhythms of the latter. Early Clutch also comes to mind. The riffs are brutish and dissonant, but what drives things is the 'Brann Dailor on downers' drumming of Nikola B. Singer Ivan E tends to disregard bar lines, which takes getting used to, but which heightens the off-kilter attack. The recording is nice and beefy, with mastering by Steve Austin (of Today Is the Day fame). Fans of Orange and Sunn amp'd bands will like this.
Brann Dailor is a huge influence on Nikola B. Nikola's creative playing has the same rebellious vibe as Mastodon on Remission and is the motor for the dissonant and raging guitar playing of Ashas Adzhun. The production is rough and filthy that matches the heavy and low metal perfectly. The songs on the album are a combination of dragging, repeating parts that are the entrance for explosive climaxes. Invocating is Le Charmeur De Serpents with the charming vocals of Ivan E but actually all the songs are parts of a concept to put you in trance. They succeed. Fans of Today is the Day, Mastodon and Neurosis must check this out.
Vocally and in terms of the density they're shooting for with the natural warmth of the recording I can definitely pick out a Neurosis influence; and I could see the pulsing, fuzzy grit of the textures and the subtly rocked out vibe of some of the riffs tied to a Kyuss sort of sound; but they're tossing around so many influences that it's not that simple - which is of course a good thing. It's not that rocked out, for example, and the moody heaviness isn't particularly over the top - it's the kind of "heavy" that's both sonic and suggested, as far as the overall aesthetic of the album's concerned. There's a good dose of relatively straightforward rhythmic pounding and repetition, with ample shifts within the compositions that do at times roam into slightly more discordant or chaotic territories, but the end result feels quite unified. Much of the explosive energy comes from the drumming, which I have to mention is absolutely badass.
