Lords of Metal webzine by Selim Power Trios Rule! A bluesy yet ballsy guitar sound and a bass guitar that puts the ”Walk” back into Walking bass driven on by a drummer that knows how to lay down a groove and a break a sandpaper-swallowing-3-bottles-of-tequilla-a-day-swiggin’-throat with a knack for melody, all perfectly retro and 70’s and not bothering to be all too quirky or original just Heavy and Groovy! I love this shit! The best thing about this album is that this band knows how to write a song and has a damn good way of accentuating each high point. For instance the bass guitar solo in ‘Let it Go’ and the heavy chorus of ‘Don’t Ask Me Where I Stand’. But also the emotional verses of ‘Would I Make You Believe?’ and the beautiful solo and accompanying riff in that same song are just the things that make you realize you just listened through an entire album that is 2 seconds shy of 50 minutes without getting bored once. ‘Follow The Fools’ brought memories of those old albums I bought by bands like Jethro Tull and of course the almighty Black Sabbath (in the improv like solo part). I could go on naming every song on this album but fact is that if you like rock the seventies way you really can’t go wrong with this little gem. Another funny thing about this album is the fact that band added liner notes to each song in the sleeve text. That way you get an idea of how the band worked in the studio and what the songs stand for musically, very cool! I don’t know what it is but everything about this album breathes laidbackness and modesty. The last sentence in the notes is “thanks for listening blind dog.” and I’d like to reply to that; thanks for making ‘Captain Dog Rides Again’ such a breath of fresh air in my daily diet of usually crappy and mediocre music! 80/100 << Back to reviews of Captain Dog Rides Again |
