Accolades for The Monkees' Uncle
With Altamont, Crover, the drummer for sludge titans the Melvins, picks up the guitar and steps up to the mic. It's not exactly the glacial tempos and monolithic riffs of his other band, but Altamont generates hissing noise, spectacularly ugly guitar sounds, suffocating blankets of distortion, destabilizing upper-cut accents and unexpected turnarounds. "Dum Dum Fever" is a high point, with its disheveled chunking, gruff snarl-singing and cap-gun snare cracks. Like the Melvins, Altamont values mass and gravity over velocity.
