Accolades for Self Titled
Energy is definitely a key factor in the Rue sound and they got it cranked up on 11 all the time. Rue is one of those bands that like to mix it up a bit and deafen a bit as well, you know, some blood curdling vocals over mostly heavy riff thick song after song. The sound is a mean and aggressive one reminding me of Eyehategod and YOB in that respect. Most of the main bulks of the riffs are classic rock influenced for certain, but these guys lay heavy into mixing metal/punk into it well. Doom riffs and changes for days. If you like Eyehategod or Bongzilla then you will surely be pretty pleased with this CD. Rue does their own take on what is going on. I found their sound fresh at times with some pretty cool ideas incorporated into their sound that you don't normally hear. Heavy heavy heavy!
Rue seamlessly mixes together elements of rock, crusty punk, stoner, hardcore, thrash and sludge into a potent, vitriolic brew. The guitar is of course way down-tuned and the lead singer can scream with the best of them, but there are also moments of melody floating around in the songs. Very tight, compact songwriting, no wasted moments. Rue reminds me at times of Mugwart sludgerock that somehow manages to add in melody without sacrificing any of the brutality. Fans of Alabama Thunder Pussy and Beaten Back to Pure who can handle the harsh vocal parts will really dig this, too.
