Rickshaw Release Party w. The Rockets
@ Sticky Fingers, Gothenburg
Thursday, December 7th - 2000
It was a while since I had a chance to see some high energy rock n roll performed in a smokefilled club, so it was with high hopes I turned up at Sticky Fingers for Rickshaws releaseparty for their new LP (Yes, LP... no CD)...
When I got their I hadnt slept for over 30 hours, so it had better be some pretty explosive performances to keep me awake all through the sets. When The Rockets finally entered the stage I was about to fall asleep standing on my feet, but as soon as the sound of the first chord hit my ears I was hooked.
This powertrio knows how to rock, it was full speed ahead from the get go. When performed live, the songs of The Rockets have more of an 70s hard rock vibe to `em... I bought three of their singles at the gig, so I have had a little chance to compare `em after the gig. And, yes, they sound great on vinyl... heavy rock n roll in the same league as bands like Hellacopters, allthough The Rockets have pretty much a sound of their own... but, its at least in the same vein... The 70s vibe are pretty evident on the vinyls to, but it really comes alive when played live... especiallay in songs like 1972... no wonder ;)

One of the high points from The Rockets performance was when the the singer/guitarist left the stage and went out in the audience for a guitarsolo... thats rock n roll for ya... After a pretty short set consisting of seven songs (see setlist below), I was kinda drained... but, after another dose of caffeine I was set for the main attraction of the night...
Rickshaw opened their set with a fast and furious song called Summer Fun, one of those kinda punky rock songs thatll really set the pace for the rest of the set. And, man... it was the pedal to the metal for the rest of the set...
Rickshaw have been compared to bands like Hellacopters and Backyard Babies, and sure... theres a lot of similarities, its the same kinda high energy approach... especially live. But, I think you gotta throw in stuff like Sissies and Smoke Blow in the mix to give ya an idea of their sound... the easiest way to describe `em would be Hellacopters with a slight stoner rock touch... what the heck, its all rock n roll... if you like your rock n roll performed with lotsa high energy, youll dig this band...

The set consisted of both songs from the new album and a bunch of older tunes from the 7 vinyl releases theyve done in the past... it was all good... After this sheer onslaught of high energy rock n roll, I was totally drained... and now I had to drive home... for the most part of the drive I had to roll down the window and stick my head out into the rain, not to fall asleep at the wheel, and yet when I came home I couldnt fall asleep... the same old same old, Im having a hard time winding down after a good gig... when Im writing this I still havent slept a minute... its close to 48 hours now... man, I gotta wind down ;)
