Accolades for Mind Control for Infants
Such a selection of individuals (Plotkin, Turner, and O'Malley) on one disc might make a storm of ear-bleeding noise seem inevitable, but this is not the case. Mind Control for Infants is so minimal it is almost not there for much of the CD's six unnamed tracks of spectacular stillness. The music explores a variety of low-key guitar techniques, slide guitar and traditional picking, suspending each note and gesture in a cavernous space maintained by carefully manipulated feedback and reverb. Mind Control for Infants repays quiet, careful listening which allows you to catch the microtonal inflections that you would otherwise miss, producing a rich and rewarding listening experience one can easily get totally absorbed in.
Contemplative as it is calming, Mind Control for Infants nonetheless demands mood-altering interaction and mind-controlling attention. The Lotus Eaters are far from "easy listening." In the Lotus Eaters' world, low-end gurgles co-exist with delicately treated strums of the guitar and sub-aquatic plunges of reverb. The result is mountainous as it is minimal, without genre as it is without boundary.
