Chicago Doomed and Stoned Days 1, II, III
« on: May 30, 2018, 04:39:06 PM »
Day One is

FRIDAY 6/1:
INTER ARMA
Black Pyramid
Black Road
ATTALLA
Shadow Witch
Snow Burial
PALE GREY LORE

It starts at 6pm Friday. Way fucking far away, practically in Indiana America. I made myself a deal whereby if I have to drive to the show and not drink after 10:45pm, then I get to smoke cigarettes.

The per band cost of this fest, is like -0.80 cents. They pay you!  I am aware of the headliner act and Andy's Black Pyramid operation- the rest of the line up, aside from Shadow Witch which I may have seen recently, doesn't readily conjure up an immediate association but that's good. Let's see what happens.  Per my personal preferences, I will be there by 5:45pm to make sure I see the start up. I will probably go extra early to get a Kuma's burger and... work this shit right.

I wonder why those 2 bands are in ALL CAPS? Perhaps a shortcut. I'm ready. I hope they have a coat check.

I wish there was a guarantee of clean comfortable restrooms, delicious food trucks, weed, a competent waiter service and ample seating with sight lines. I don't see why rock n roll has to be so uncomfortable.

Did you mean to post this in the Live Events category?

It's unlikely we'll be there as we have tickets to some of the shows that are part of the Onion's Comedy fest going on this weekend. David Cross on Friday, and frankly, that's really the only night of D&S that grabbed me.

Day one: after an 89 minute (?!) drive I parked tentatively a block away (no pay box? no signs?) and arrived to a decidedly empty venue. Taylor Swift is playing nearby so I resisted the temptation to go see Taylor and I got a wonderful mango Kuma's Beer ($8, I drank 4 or 5 between 6pm and 10pm and then they ran out). The mango is aroma only. Music is Sinatras greatest hits.

...later.

I gotta love Reggie's - great venue, a warm and welcoming staff - and the food! I got the turkey BLT but those in the know will go to Reggie's just for the Reuben.  The nice deadhead gentlemen (deadheads love our musics!) I talked to during the evening told me he is allowed two each evening and would go there for the Rueben's alone. My hero. Reggie's is a terrific venue for this music, little upstairs sitting area, and two rows of seating on one wall, which I require.

Things kicked off on schedule with Columbus OH's Pale Grey Lore - playing confidently to a sparsely populated venue. They have well crafted songs and all 3 of them sing!  I returned home with their CD.

Wonderful Salt of the Earth recording artist Shadow Witch delivered an amazing set of their attractive music. They include lots of interesting flourishes, which my row mate commented 'I liked the ending of that one'.   I saw them at NESD and was looking forward to seeing them again here. This is a band to watch as they ascend in their performances. Perhaps they play out a lot?  Anyway, keep a look out for them - their wild-man singer performs barefoot and, in this case, wearing a Horehound t-shirt, which I complimented him for later in the evening, and I suspect he was gifted at the NESD fest.

By-gosh, ATTALLA is from Oshkosh Wisconsin. This band has a energetic set of heavy tunes played (sometimes) at a laid back tempo that set them apart from the genre a bit. I will type more but this is actually the last paragraph I tackled and I have run out of words.  ATTALLA is terrific!

The band Black Road has a monster bassist, and I assume 3 additional members but standing in front of homeboy as I was, I mostly got a fine treat watching his springy playing. One of the pluses of seeing live bands is getting to watch a skilled musician up close. 'Chick singer' is the new N word, so, 'female vocalist'. Really fun and she was into it. As an aside, they were the only band to vend size M girls sleeveless shirts, which I have been assigned to bring back from these fests if I know what's good for me.  If you see a Zumba mom in some heavy metal T-shirts, that's my work.

Led by Pabst Blue Ribbon addict and now-legionary reluctant stonerrock figurehead, our friend "dinger" Andy of the Black Pyramid performed a louder than everyone else, stomping performance. They have a lot of jaggity unexpected riffs. I haven't revisited the Black Pyramid material in quite a while and was pleasantly surprised.

Everyone's extra gloomy favorite and headliner Inter Arma brought the noise, normally not my cup of screaming hot tea but I do like their recorded matter and anyone that can fit a Theremin into the mix has got to know what they are doing. The quiet parts are nice. The front man is a show in himself, as is the giant viking man drummer. He carried in a big stick. Literally a stick.  I liked it a lot and will view them enthusiastically in the future.

Then I drove home 19 mes in 1.75 hours, which is 10 MPH (?) some sort of event (Taylor Swift again?) was discharging drunken Chicagoan's onto the LSD at midnight. With the 4 lanes narrowing down to one up north.  The fools!  I got to listen to a lot of music and smoke cigarettes as a reward for cutting off beer at 10pm. I forgot to get a show poster on the way out cause I wanted to talk to Andy in person a bit. A coyote ran across the road nearer to my house!

I would rate day one of this fest... 5 Bongs!

Day II placeholder, some winners here

Day III placeholder, some more winners here

Sunday morning I got to get up at 7am and drive an hour to my younger son's high school graduation ceremony. All the metoo and BLM and LGBT civil rights themed material in the speeches made me cry but luckily I brought a paper towel. A not-insignificant portion of the African-Americans in the crowd sat for the national anthem. There were 865 kids in his graduating class. The mayor did the keynote.

Openers Tripping the Mechanism and Scientist did their sets. I was too exhausted and hungry to enjoy, maybe if they were less yelly. Then I got 2 beers and a steak sandwich and shared the fries with some doomy woman that were vending and got my feet under me again.

I was advised herein to see Age of Truth and they didn't disappoint. They had been hanging around and whooping it up since Friday so I figured it would either be a train wreck or awesome and thankfully it was the latter. I was chatting with them off and on through the weekend, but didn't know they were the band, until I talked to the front man outside just before they went on. He jumped in the audience and did his part down on the floor, I got hit in the head with a drumstick- I'm a fan now.

And then Pale Horesmen tore up, yo. I came home with their CD and was happy to see another band with an equestrian-themed name. Chicago band playing sludge metal. They were spot-on. Good stuff!

Humbolt Park Chicago native sons Faces of the Bog (I had it as dog) were really good musicians and offered up a confident mix of heavy styles. Per bandcamp:
This sludgy offering is littered with mystical and shamanistic psychedelic vibes. However, it also seems like they dig a fair amount of grunge, and really draw inspiration from all across the doom scene. Ego Death is a very expansive album and while drawing from enough streams to fill an ocean, never comes off as pretentious or forced. This is an incredibly strong start for the young band.. They will be at Indianapolis D&S in October.

Well well well - everyone apparently knows Brain Tentacles and the 3 piece drums, bass, saxophone outfit came ready to play. Incredible bass player, I was lamenting that I had stood in front of the saxophonist instead of the bass, but then the saxophone guy put on a unicorn rubber mask and played a song that way. Heavy free jazz type stuff with a lot of craziness thrown in. The two Thai gentlemen I was standing next to gave me a run down before they went on. I would see them again eagerly.

I didn't know anything about Whores other than everyone loves them. I think I'd been leaning on the rail too heavy (I watched every single band from the front row, dammed straight!) cause my right arm locked up in me (which freaked me out - heart attack?) and I had to go sit on the side seats (you could easily see every band from wherever you wanted, it was never packed)  Since you already know all about them I will close out, obviously most of Sunday's audience came for this performance and they stepped up.

Then for the first time I got to drive the 19 miles to my home at full speed, taking a scant 39 minutes for once, instead of 2 fucking hours like the prior 5 runs.  There was only a short delay when I drove by the random shooting that had occurred earlier on the LSD.  Hooray for Chicago Doomed and Stoned!  Met a bunch of great people this weekend. I'm starting to lean to staying somewhat sober after 10pm at these things. The staff at Reggies, the fest organizers, the vendors and the attendees were all open and welcoming. I'm inspired to re-ignite seeing shows locally.
