Accolades for Hex
Big Elf is one of the best things around nowadays. I can't stop listening to them. So catchy, yet retro. Imagine The Beatles meets Deep Purple and Red-era King Crimson with Ozzy on vocals.
There is no band like Big Elf. At least not any band that is alive today. Big Elf is heavily influenced by the 60s and the 70s, and for that I am thankful. I cant think of any band at all that to Big Elfs extent has got a sound thats this, say, vintage. The similarities with 70s Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd are so utterly obvious. Though, with Big Elfs bulletproof self-esteem, and great musical abilities, they do it all in honor. This is about roots.
I cant remember listening to a more creative record than Hex for a very long time. Here is depth, even if its talk about punching groovers or slow down and atmospheric material with Tommy Bolin-ish guitarplay. Even the tracks that are less fascinating melody-wise, stay as interesting and are great listening experiences due to the constantly changing inner landscape of the arrangements. At the end of the album, Big Elf salutes the variety of rock through a three track finale with great psychedelic arrangements.
