Accolades for Migration
This album will most likely be the heaviest thing released this year. Buried at Sea's doom dirge is so thick, it will leave your jaw on the floor. This album is not for the weak of heart. It is filled with pure hatred. These 3 songs move at a snail's pace and I challenge any of you Southern Lord fanatics to tell me this ain't the heaviest shit around. This band is recommended if you like: Burning Witch, Khanate, Sunn0))), Neurosis, dot(.), Pelican, and Unearthly Trance. In other words, the heaviest of the heavies. All songs 10 plus minutes in length unfold slowly to envelope your mind and body.
Think of Migration as one piece with three distinctive parts. The dueling vocals, though tastefully sparse, are ugly and harsh. They are placed perfectly in the mix and treated more like a texture than a narrative tool. The hypnosis cast upon the listener cannot be broken even as the music shifts and changes form. There are great moments where endless build-ups finally open up and reveal the mightiest riffs ever heard, repeated over and over until you forget your name.
Buried at Sea have a damn good thing going, 3 songs on this full length, each of them well over the 10 minute length and of epic proportions. Evil riff after monster riff with tons of movements and parts, but slowly does this stuff move. It's more of a heavy throttling tuned down sound that has slow changes, drone riffs but with a full rhythm section. The drummer absolutely slays and has a pretty nice precise style that you don't hear much in this kind of long movement oriented song style. Pretty interesting CD, it sure surprised me. Get this one if you like the more progressive 70's Pink Floyd crossed with evil doom. Also has the same kind of tones reminiscent of Sons of Otis, mainly because it's mostly instrumental songs on this one with minimal vocals. Also worth checking into if you like YOB or any other bands that tune to A and play long drawn out epic doom ridden songs with domination through amplification.
