Accolades for Self Titled
Justin Broadrick, mastermind of the legendary Godflesh, unleashes his new project, Jesu, with the same oppressive power as his past effort, but adds a gloss of decadence and a calming vigor that could be defined as My Bloody Valentine by way of the Swans. Jesu salvages Godfleshs cold, dismal dissonance, as well as Broadricks undisputed guitar genius for noise, applying them to a surprising new layer of emotional content.
Sounds like the soundtracks for the Blind era Swans mixed with Black Sabbath circa Sabotage.
Shit like this ought to come with a warning. It has the bleak, machine-like soundscapes of industrial music, back when it was a budding genre, yet with a deep, highly emotional impact. The eight songs on this full length are akin to picking at a scab, trying to scratch that ceaseless itch, even after you break the skin and start clawing at the meat underneath. Theyre less songs than orchestral pieces, with more depth than what youd find in their contemporaries. Jesu will take you to the edge of despair, and then carry you to the other side.
