An Interview with Urlo and Poia of Malleus...

Malleus is the art design, Ufomammut is the music...between the two, Urlo and Poia keep pretty busy it seems. After seeing so much of their artwork and hearing the band I was curious what was behind those two so I interviewed them recently, mainly to answer some questions I had been wondering and maybe some of you too...the response I received was not what I expected! Mainly the answers were written as a unit instead of individuals making me believe that these guys might have been seperated and birth. Check it out...

Interview By: robwrong Date: 11/15/2001 10:23:16 AM

Rob: What is the whole idea behind Malleus for those who don`t know

Urlo and Poia: Malleus is born at the end of 1999 as a natural evolution of our lives. We`ve always loved to use pencils and colours and when Black Widow recs asked us if we wanna work on the cover art for the tribute to Blue Cheer (Blue Explosion) (available for purchase in our All That`s Heavy Online Music Store...) we`ve touched the sky with our fingers:-) Time has teached us lots of things and working more and more on our art we`ve created a little malleusdelic Universe where we still live:-)

Rob: How did you guys meet, and are both of you in Ufomammut?

Urlo and Poia: We met ten years ago, when we started in studying at the University. We were in the same High school before (we live in a little town where everybody knows everyone) but not in the same class and we were not friends. By the way... we thought we were not nice before meeting... Poia thought Urlo was a moron and Urlo thought Poia was a bag of shit. And we were totally right...:-) We play in UFOMAMMUT too, it`s a cool mafia band, all pizza, coffee and mandolins. Have You ever heard about our new song "Al Capone rock`n`roll"? It`s about our fantastic mustaches. The song is about our childhood and the clandestine fabric we got. We were in alcohol and fireworks and after a terrible explosion we lost our mustaches.

Rob: Who plays what in the band, and how does it crossover with Malleus

Urlo and Poia: Urlo is the bass player and sometimes he likes to scream. In the meantime Poia breaks our balls with his guitar meeooww. We`re totally awful in playing our instruments. We have a great lack of talent. That`s the reason why we`ve decided to start in painting. We think drawing naked women and muscled men is better than loosing our time in trying to learn the songs of Ramazzotti.

Rob: What does Malleus mean? Ufomammut?

Urlo and Poia: Malleus comes from the latin language. It means HAMMER. It comes from "Malleus Maleficarum" too, it was the "book of the witches" of the Inquisition (You know, when cristians were so kind with women...). UFOMAMMUT means UFO and Mammoth together, it`s the past mixed with the future. It`s written in Italian, we like the way it sounds.

Rob: What are some of the bands you have done artwork for?

Urlo and Poia: Ufomammut... well, That`s all Folks!, Cuda, Canyon Creep, Baby Woodrose, 500 ft of Pipe, Paul Chain, Nebula... and so on... Check out our site!!! (Most of these titles and more are available for purchase in our All That`s Heavy Online Music Store...)

Rob: I saw a video that you did for the Ufomammut project. What other bands have you done videos for?

Urlo and Poia: Nobody wants our videos. Do You want a video? We`d like to do lots of videos, we got a new member who has joined the crew. HE IS A GIRL, she is nice too. So bands: Ask her to work for You:-)

Rob: What are some of the projects you are working on for bands? or better yet which bands?

Urlo and Poia: We got some project going on: apart for a MANOWAR tribute (that`s the greatest thing of ever!!), we`re working at Baby Woodrose posters, then EXP cd, Yob, Bongzilla, Cruevo, Hypnosis, Marshan, Generous Maria, and we hope new ones will come!!! We need to work, we`re hungry of painting! Please help us in create our personal emperor of drawings and art!

Rob: What do you guys do outside of the art department, what are your day jobs hobbies...

Urlo and Poia: Well, considering our hobbies are music and doing graphic and art... we drink decoctions, sometimes we go to cinema and we make love with our friends. We`re trying to make our fishes eat Viagra. We`re curious about seeing them really hard on the floor. We make shopping and we walk hand in hand like a Dolce and Gabbana clone, we watch tv and we hope one day all the fridges of the world will have a "Urlo and Poia" magnet on their door.

Rob: Here are the 13 stupid questions that we ask everyone....If you weren`t a rocker, what would you most like to be?

Urlo and Poia: Two dangerous killers working for Greenpeace. Probably we would kill whales and pandas for creating a superb soup for MacDonard`s Big Burgers.

Rob: What was your worst gig and why? What was your best gig and why?

Urlo and Poia: All our gigs are the worst cause we are not able to play. But we think all of them are the best one cause we`re incredible musicians.

Rob: Top 3 movies, books and albums of all time?

Urlo and Poia: Seriously this time: 2001 a space odissey, Easy rider and Buffallo 66. The Dharma bums, The painted bird and The Playboy book. Meddle, Abbey Road, Sleep`s holy mountain listened together with Lysol (cause we got 4 albums but we wanna tell You only 3, so we got one on cd and we put the other one on vynil and we make them play together, well it`s a little cahotic but who cares?)

Rob: How often do you surf the net and what do you mostly do while online?

Urlo and Poia: We spend hours surfing sites about gardeners.

Rob: What is your favourite city and venue to play, and why?

Urlo and Poia: Surely JH Sojo, Leuven, Belgium. We`ve enjoyed our gig here last winter and we`d like to play there again. Maybe as support act of Pavarotti and Friends.

Rob: What is the most Rock `n` Roll thing you`ve ever done? What`s the most Rock `n` Roll thing you`ve seen someone else do?

Urlo and Poia: The most R`n`r thing we`ve ever done has been put a glass of beer on the amplifier and hear it burping while switching off... cool thing we suggest everybody. The best one we`ve seen is surely the clone band of the Doors playing a dramatic gig on TV, in a famous italian talk show. Cool song for a cool band. Sorry they`ven`t got mustaches. The singer was Jim Morrison himself, we are sure.

Rob: What`s your worst "bad trip" story?

Urlo and Poia: Travelling towards the mountains in the snow for reaching Switzerland during our last Tour. We`ve met strange people like the famous American Swiss man driving a japanese car.

Rob: What`s the most painful thing you have ever witnessed at a rock show?

Urlo and Poia: Again, the Doors clones. Technology is really painful when it`s used for silly things.

Rob: How old were you when you first realize you wanted to rock?

Urlo and Poia: We`ve never realized it yet. Old is the right word.

Rob: What`s the most embrassing job you ever had?

Urlo and Poia: We remember when we worked for Superman and we had to save the world. We got terrific pink costumes and we use shoehorns for fighting against Mr U. We got a shotgun using urine pills as bullets. This was really embarassing.

Rob: What`s your favourite ice cream flavor?

Urlo and Poia: Maybe boiled chicken.

Rob: If you could date any rock star Dead or Alive in the world, who would it be? Movie star?

Urlo and Poia: The singer of Dead or Alive, do you remember him/her? You spin me around... As for the Movie star we`d like to meet Vincent Gallo.

Rob: What would be the ultimate dream gig of all time line-up be, with your band opening? Limit to 3 bands please (including your own...) and where?

Urlo and Poia: Pavarotti and his two friends.
