Rob: You have been pretty busy this year, recording your new album and doing the drum duties on Mondo Generator recording as well going on tour with them! You recently just got back I hear from tour in fact...how was it?
Brant: The Mondo Tour was cool. A little unorganized but thats how Mondo does things.
Rob: You are about to release `Keep Your Cool` on your own imprint `Duna` Records...how would you say this album differs from your last release with `the Operators`?
Brant: Keep you cool is a straight forward "Brant" recording. It`s not quite polished as much as Operators and more raw emotion.
Rob: I have been listening to `Keep your Cool` lately...reminds me a bit of some laid back funk groove 70`s soul stuff...how would you describe the sound you are going for?
Brant: The K.Y.C. sound is brown. Its warm and a little dusty...greasy.
Rob: What are some of your future plans? Are you going to continue touring with Mondo Generator?
Brant: Future plans are to tour with my new back-up band "the Bros" first in California (9/4-9/7) and then Europe (10/16-10/25). Also to put out more records on Duna. Mondo tours are up in the air.
Rob: How much time do you spend in the studio? And do you primarily write stuff right in the studio or at home?
Brant: I spend very little time in the studio. 1-2 weeks and about half of my material are conceived while recording.
Rob: To continue the last question, how do you write a song? Do you hum a tune to yourself and then it just grows from there?
Brant: I don`t have a "normal process" for writing a song. It usually starts with a feeling and I just expand on it.
Rob: Where do you record at and why? Do you stick to the desert for most of that...Joshua Tree?
Brant: I record wherever I can. Cut this last record in New Jersey. I do record a lot in the desert but it`s not a "must do" thing.
Rob: Hows the skating been going lately? done much?
Brant: I cruise around town on my skate when I can. Nothin too radical these days.
Rob: Here is a little thing at stonerrock.com that we call 13 stupid questions, I usually ask these in email interviews and not on the phone so I haven`t had you answer these questions before...You can make these as short as you want answer wise if you wish...If you werent a rocker, what would you most like to be?
Brant: If I wasn`t a rocker I`d be a gardener or a boxer.
Rob: What was your worst gig and why? What was your best gig and why?
Brant: Worst gig... Fu manchu opening for Jimmy Page/Black Crowes. why?... cuz it never happened.
Rob: Top three movies, books and albums of all time?
Brant:
Top 3 movies: Apocalypse Now. Peter Sellers` The Party. Victory.
Top 3 books: Joseph Campbell "the Power of Myth". The Muhammad Ali Reader. "Catch a fire" Bob Marley.
Top 3 albums: Hendrix "are you experienced". The Doors "the Doors". "Fun House" the Stooges.
Rob: How often do you surf the net and what do you mostly do while online?
Brant: I don`t surf the net. If I`m on-line I`m checking mail.
Rob: what is your favorite city and venue to play, and why?
Brant: Fav city to play... Perth, Australia. Who wouldn`t love rockin the most secluded city in the world.
Rob: What is the most rock `n` roll thing youve ever done?
Brant: Most R-n-R thing I`ve ever done... Got too stoned before goin on stage with Kyuss to open the show for Metallica down in Australia in `93. By the time I realized what song we opened with we had already been playing it for 10 minutes.
Rob: Whats the most rock `n` roll thing youve seen someone else do?
Brant: Most R-nR thing I ever saw. Dwarves, Country Club, Reseda Ca. `90. Fuckin insane. 13 minutes of pure R-n-R bliss.
Rob: whats your worst "bad trip" story?
Brant: Worst "Bad trip"... Smoked too much "`train Wreck" in Humboldt. Forgot my name for like.. an hour.
Rob: Whats the most painful thing you have ever witnessed at a rock show?
Brant: I once saw Jesse James(from monster Garage/West coast choppers) stage dive off a 10 ft. stage at Harpos` in Detroit in `92. Full Swan. He was sober too. Until he got put on pain killers for his broken collar bone. The dude is nuts. Still.
Rob: How old were you when you first realize you wanted to rock?
Brant: I was 10 when I realized I wanted to rock. I was 13 when I realized I NEEDED to rock.

Rob: Whats your favorite ice cream flavor?
Brant: Favorite ice cream? Coffee.
Rob: If you could date any rock star dead or alive in the world, who would it be? Movie star?
Brant: If I could date any rock star/movie star... wouldn`t mind having a night on the town with Sade. Madonna circa `83. I kind of got a thing for this Michelle Branch. Thats fucked. Movie star... it`s all about Selma Hayek.
Rob: What would be the ultimate dream gig of all time line-up be, with your band opening? Limit to three bands please (including your own...) and where?
Brant: Dream gig... open for MC5 and Iggy and the Stooges in Stockholm Sweden. Make sure the Swedes don`t get too cocky. |
