  The Glasspack - U.S. Tour Diary Pt.1

Here it is - The Glasspack "American Exhaust" U.S. Tour Diary Part 1 for your reading enjoyment...

Memphis, Tn. at Murphy`s on Friday October 5, 2001 - The Glasspack & The Lewds
We loaded up the trailor and the pick-up truck with all the necessary tools to rock and headed on our way from Louisville, Ky to Memphis, Tn.. It was Bucky, Bobby, Rico, the Captain, and me, Dave. The ride to Memphis was very pleasant and oddly enough it rained the same as it did the first time we played in Memphis with The Lewds the spring of 2000. The gas prices were fair and I think we spent $41 and 6 and a half hours to get there. We found the club, loaded in, set up, and ordered some food from the bar. Free Food!!! Free Liquor!!! I love the south. I love The Lewds! Everything was running smoothly and then bobby started to not feel so well. We had Rico take him to the hospital in Memphis before our set and Bucky started to go over the songs on bass. We managed to get a little liquored up and played our first set of the tour with Bucky filling Bobby`s shoes on bass. The Glasspack is always well recieved down south and Memphis was no exception. We pulled off an astonishing set despite line-up changes and worries of Bobby being in the hospital. We knew we had to leave him in the hospital and Bucky was gonna have to play bass for the rest of the tour. Our set was a combination of songs that brought together the best of our Riverock full-length release "American Exhaust," our Underground/Riverock e.p. release "Road Warriors," and the not yet released Small Stone full-length release "Powderkeg." The Lewds played an amazing hometown set and they have never ceased to blow me away. They are very nice polite southern gentlemen. We thanked them after the show, loaded up, and headed on our way to Dallas for The SHOD (Stoner Hands of Doom) Festival. We were added to the festival at the last minute to take Operator Generator`s headlining spot for the Saturday night of the festival. Unfortunately, we had to cancel the gig in Oklahoma City at The Green Door but we will go there next time and repay our dept in full.

Dallas, Tx. at The Blood Red Club on Saturday October 6, 2001 - The SHOD Festival
After leaving the club in Memphis, Bucky took over driving and we headed to Dallas. Rico and I climbed in the back of the pick-up (which had a topper) and settled in for what we thought would be a nice drunken sleep. Shortly thereafter it seemed, we woke to the sounds and smells of squealing tires and stinky brakes in Arkansas. The truck felt as if it was going to roll. I just covered my face with my sleeping bag and realized it was time to die, the first morning of the tour. We finally reached a stopping point on the other side of the highway. I was rattled. Apparently, Bucky had traveled beyond the wall of sleep while driving and jack-knifed Rico`s brand new trailor and F-150. Luckily, no one was injured and no other autos were involved but the truck`s quarter panel was fucked and the trailor was smashed a little, cutting the light cords to the trailor. Rico immidiately took his spot at the wheel and we headed to the nearest gas station. We worked on fixing the lights for a while with no results. It was about this time that I realized that my can of tobacco had blown out the topper window when it popped open during the roadly chaos. This meant that the money I had hidden in the can had went with it. We immediately headed back to find the skidmarks Bucky had left on the highway. By finding the marks, we knew we could find where the tobacco can had flown out the window. We combed the side of the highway for a while and we started to find the money trailed down the side of the highway in the grass. We gathered the money at about 7 a.m. and headed on down the road. I remember rico looking at me and saying "God damn, we just started the tour, whats next?" On the way to Dallas we found a very nice AAA man to figure out that we had blown a fuse and thats why the lights on the trailor didn`t work. God bless that Texan man, we were idiots. We finally made it to Dallas with no sleep and managed to pull off yet another fine rockin` set at The SHOD Festival. I met a lot of people at the festival that I write on the internet. It was great!!!!! We managed to make a whole $10 at the festival, after spending about $65 for gas and $5 for parking to get there. We stayed in a very over-priced hotel down the street that Saturday night

Dallas, Tx. on Sunday October 7, 2001
We woke up sunday looking forward to meeting Witch Mountain and General Dan Beland (EL Danno) at The SHOD Festival. We were to do a lot of shows in the coming week (which we named The Bitch Mountain, Asspack, and Bonerrock.com Tour) with Witch Mountain and Stonerrock.com. We also had the day off. The funny thing is I dont ever remember meeting them. I just remember heading off to Houston and being too high to be alive. I think we drove and slept in a rest area that Monday morning after The SHOD Festival. Then we woke up and drove to Houston.

Houston, Tx. at Fitzgerald`s on Monday October 8, 2001 - The Glasspack & Witch Mountain
Well we rolled into Houston way too early for the show but that is how we do it so we can check out each city we go to. Houston is cleaner than a can of Lysol and every street we drove down had a cow on every corner. Houston looked like Andy Warhol had been reincarnated into a milkman. Every cow was horribly decorated in a pop art fashion. We called our new friend Yvette (Isis from the Discussion Forums) to show us around Houston before the show. We then loaded into Fitzgerald`s and chatted with the guys there. They let me use their computer to notify the Glasspack Army of show changes in San Francisco. I hate show changes. Anyway, right about that time Yvette showed up and man was she a sight for sore eyes. She took us on a tour of Houston and explained that is was cow week in Houston. We took some photos with the cows and then headed back to Yvette`s apartment to let her dog water his favorite tree. We then dropped off Rico and Bucky to see a relative in the hospital (Rico has family everywhere). Yvette, the Captain, and I visited some artistic meditation center in downtown houston and the silence nearly blew my eardrum. My memory is bad so I dont recall the name of this meditiation place we were at. Speaking of memory, I had mentioned earlier in the diary that I do not remember meeting Danno and the Witch Mountain guys at SHOD but when we got back to Fitzgerald`s and they started filing in, I knew them somehow. Weird, huh? We had a chat, smoke, and some drinks and then Witch Mountain set up their equipment. I was pretty tanked by the time they started playin but man, did they sound good. Loud as hell and groovin with my buzz, Witch Mountain makes me feel like I am going to float away. After they finished, we set up and played a set that I dont even remember. To tell ya the truth, I dont even remember the rest of the night.

Austin, Tx. (The Promised land) at The Ritz on Tuesday October 9, 2001 - The Glasspack, Excess Lettuce, Hobble & Witch Mountain
I woke up in a sea of drool in the cab of Rico`s truck and had a look around. I was in Houston still and we were parked outside of Fitzgerald`s. I spotted a 7-11 and made a move for some coffee and tobacco. I really hate coffee and tobacco a lot. They have made me their prisoner. Anyway, we got woke up and headed to Austin to hook up with our good buddy Tommy, one of the dudes in charge of the historic Ritz. We got into Austin early and went to Tommy`s apartment to catch up with him and get a shower. By this time, I had noticed I was gettin ill and my voice was going quick but I marched on like a good soldier. Tommy hooked us up with some tea and a shower. Late afternoon, Bucky and The Captain rode their bikes to the club. Tommy, Rico, and I went to the music store to pick up some drumsticks for Ian (Excess Lettuce) and The Captain. I also needed to get a speaker cord. It was the third time I had lost one this year. After, leaving the music store we went to the club and loaded our equipment up The Ritz Mountain. They got an upstairs we play in that has at least 2 billion steps for us to carry our 2 billion pound full-stacks up. I love The Ritz, Tommy, and Ian though. They have treated us like the kings we are not. Tommy ordered some pizza and we got some coffee up the street. When we came back, Excess Lettuce was there and we had a ritual smoke and shot the shit for a while. Witch Mountain set up to play first and rocked me once again. Austin enjoyed Witch Mountain. Next was Hobble, an Austin band. They were a great rock act with some real stage presence kicking. After Hobble, Excess Lettuce started rockin evryone`s asses off. Grant and Tommy are some very talented and perverted musicians. Excess Lettuce should be sponsered by Hustler. They are amazingly fun to watch and listen to. This brings us to the Pack. We set up and I felt very drunk. See Tommy has this little silent game he plays called "Lets See How Fucked Up I Can Get The Bands Before They Play." He had already managed to completely fuckup Mountain Rob on Yagermonster before Witch Mountain played and he had been trying to get me in the meantime. He got me alright. We ripped threw a crazy ass drunken Glasspack set in which I had managed to all but destroy the house piano. I took my guitar in the middle of "Jim Beam and Good Green" and drove it straight across the black keys of the piano while I had the vocal mic submerged somehwhere deep inside of it. It totally reminded me of a Looney Tunes cartoon. Every black key flew into the air in a perfect line, one after another. Some crazy ass motherfuckers in Austin with my friend Sandy had been trying to stick a framed photo of my friend Jimmy from back home in my shirt while playing. I do not know the signifigance of these drunk dudes but that photo managed to stay around the whole fuckin tour. We finished the set and I appologized for the piano. I then found Rico a couple blocks away sleeping in the truck and told him it was time to go. I then walked back to The Ritz to start loading up the gear. Ian and I were chatting out front when we saw a spotlight and heard a megaphone telling us to get back in the bar. Ian and I started to run back in the bar and then we noticed it was Rico playing cops and robbers on the c.b.`s external speaker and a 1,000 candlewatt spotlight! That was great. We loaded up the gear and gave our Austin buddy`s a final fairwell. I really like Austin a lot. Austin knows how to rock!
