Sun Dial's fourth record, Return Journey, was an altogether different animal than its classic Other Way Out, but indispensable nonetheless. Brimming with lush, heavily-layered arrangements, Return Journey highlighted Gary Ramon's burgeoning guitar prowess and refined writing. This album is a crucial piece of Sun Dial history.

If Other Way Out found Sun Dial exploring otherworldly psychedelia for the first time, Return Journey is, as the title attests, the band coming back from their journeys. They're a little more weathered and a little bit older, and it's reflected in the music. The band takes a darker, moodier approach to their songwriting. Their sound is replaced by a heavier Hawkwind style, with more emphasis on Gary Ramon's guitar playing. Sun Dial is an incredible band and its a shame they never got the recognition they deserved back in the 90s. For the buoyant and carefree, check out Sun Dial's Other Way Out/Other Way In. But for the darker side of Sun Dial, Return Journey is essential.
