Accolades for Masters of Magic
Riffing doom rock with a strong 70s vibe and a paganistic feel to it, would be the best quick description I can come up with. Everything on this album combines to create some very relaxing and easy listening music. Enjoyable 70s prog. rock combined with sporadic doomish and Sabbath inspired riffing and a spaced out feeling. Some of the songs are sung in French as well, which should be no surprise as we are dealing with a French band. I find the vocalist's voice to have a really soothing, almost hypnotic voice. He really lifts the entire album up to much greater highs then as what it would have been with an average vocalist. People who enjoy acts such as Pentagram, but also Witchfinder General, will really enjoy this release. Its very relaxed and "Outer space/Medieval" atmosphere will appeal to fans of stoner rock as well.
It's not easy to describe the second album of this obscure French band, again released by Black Widow Records. In some songs they are sounding like the re-animated Witchfinder General ("Over The Mountain") or Count Raven ("Violet Rainbow"), but there are enough songs, which are quite different from the heavy doom songs. It's more like a conceptional trip through different moods, played in the vein of early 70's heavy prog bands. Northwinds have captured the same mystical and strange atmosphere and mixed it up with a few early 80's Metal riffs. Masters Of Magic is not that typical Epic Doom Metal album. Northwinds have once again captured their own sound, that isn't easy to pigeon-hole. this album is a nice dreamy ride and I appreciate the fact that these talented guys are looking for their very own musical profile, somewhere between the before mentioned styles so the result is very varied.
Masters of Magic features nine tracks of rare intensity, where doom-rock riffing is calmed down by dreaming intermezzos of psycho-keyboards and acoustic guitar, with a heavy sound rooted in the seventies but always striving to the future. Masters of Magic unveils a professional and mature band, whose interest in magic and musical research introduced the members to the court of Steve Sylvester and DEATH SS, who has composed and played the fantastic intro and outro.
